Kōwhaiwhai: Wairuatanga (top)
Mate atu he tete kura, ara mai tete kura.
A waving philosophy dies away, a waving philosophy rises to us. (Really not sure for this one :/)
This pattern represents the spiritual dimension linking people together. The thoughts and action of people gathered at the marae will contribute to the overall wairua (spirit) of the marae.
Kōwhaiwhai: Tūrangawaewae (top)
Hokia ki ngā maunga kia purea koe e ngā hau o Tāwhirimatea.
Return to the mountains, to get purified by the winds of Tāwhirimatea.
This pattern is the "place of standing" of the Hongoeka marae, its symbol. It includes the horoeka, or lancewood, which abunds in the hills around the marae. Hongoeka is thought to come from the word "horoeka".
